Isabella (or The Society of Spectacle)
Brazil has recently witnessed one of the most extraordinary cases of overreaction by mass media.
It is all about little Isabella Nardoni, a 5 years old girl thrown from the 5th floor of a building in North São Paulo.
An accident? Simple murder?
It could be so, but the fact is that evidences made the Police, the media, and, consequently, the general public to believe that Isabella’s father and her stepmother would be the actual killers.
What followed was a massive commotion and the exhaustive exposition of such facts by newspapers, magazines and TV shows. Something like Madeleine McCann’s case, the British girl kidnapped in Portugal in 2007, started all over Brazil.
What we are trying to do here, with this multimedia piece, is to bring a fresh look over the media coverage of massive cases that develop into a certain amount of sensationalism.
The soundtrack is Electric Counterpoint Fast, by Steve Reich.
A Dinner Tale
Check out this slideshow we made using Rodrigo’s photos of a recent assignment he had, about “humanitary” cattle slaughter, for meat production. We used music by Clair Obscur, which added a sort of creepy mood for the photos.
Truck Accident in São Paulo
A runaway truck, heavily loaded with construction supplies, hits a house in a poor neighborhood in São Paulo, Brazil. At the time of the accident, there were 7 people inside the house. A 54 years old lady died, and 2 of her kids got hurt. The house was ruined.
National Geographic PhotoCamp 2007
Every year, National Geographic Magazine takes Photocamp to several places all around the US and the world. NG photographers and editors bring photography to the lives of kids and teenagers from these communities. In July, 2007, New York Photocamp was realized in Jackson Heights, Queens, with students from Newcomers High School. Photographer Ed Kashi was there. Check out the video.
